    Three Helpful Tips

Your child will use the following three strategies when they come to an unknown word during their reading. Reading Strategies are life long skills that children will be able to use throughout their lives.

There are 3 simple strategies for your children to remember.
  1. The first thing a child should do when they come to an unknown word is give the word a try and then ask the question to themselves, “Does it make sense?” This means does my guess make sense.
  2. The second question a child should ask him or herself is if it didn’t make sense is, “Does it look right?” This means does my guess look like the print on the page.
  3. The third question they should ask themselves is, “Does it sound right?” This means does my guess sound correct in the context of the story?
