Out-of-District-Attendance

The Board of Trustees of Lockwood Schools, recognizing that an educational requirement of its resident students includes the need for an orderly educational process and environment, free from disruption, overcrowding, and any kind of violence or disruptive influences, hereby establishes criteria on the admission of out-of-district students:

  1. Admission to Lockwood Schools as an out-of-district student is a privilege except as provided by 20-5-321, MCA. As such, the Lockwood School District will screen all out-of-district students and only consider those who meet the criteria set forth in this policy.
  2. Based on the recommendation from the building principal, the district superintendent is hereby given the authority to admit or deny any student’s admission in accordance with this policy. Students who are denied admission by the superintendent may appeal to the Board of Trustees within 30 days of said denial. The School Board shall make the final decision on admission.
  3. Except as provided by 20-5-321, MCA, all students whose legal residence is outside of the Lockwood School District will be denied enrollment pending the completion of the application process and a subsequent decision. When determining the approval or denial of an application, consideration will be given but not limited to the student’s previous attendance record, the previous school success, and the potential impact on our district’s resources, including class size, and space available, including both existing and projected space. Space available is defined as teacher-pupil ratio as well as facility space. Accreditation standards will serve to establish the maximum enrollment permitted for either regular classrooms or special education units.

Out of District Attendance

  1. When a parent/guardian wishes to have his/her child(ren) attend Lockwood Schools as an out-of-district student, he/she shall apply to the school district for the year which he/she seeks approval. Applications will be considered on a first-come, first- served basis according to date and time of receipt. Applications must be resubmitted for subsequent years. Preference will be given to children whose parents are employees of Lockwood Schools. Employees will not need to reapply each year for their children.
  2. To be admitted students must * be in good standing with the most recently attended school in terms of academics, conduct, and attendance; * demonstrate a record free of truancy; * demonstrate a clean behavior record in the school last attended for a period of at least one (1) year; * have passing grades in the school previously attended; * have correctly completed the nonresident student application process; and * present no other educationally related detriment to the students of the District. • Records from the student's previous school districts will be reviewed. • The District has the option of accepting a nonresident student who does not meet the criteria set forth herein, if the student agrees to special conditions of admission, as set forth by the District.
  3. All out-of-district students will be considered as ineligible riders for school transportation services except as required by law. See 20-10-101, MCA, for a definition of eligible rider.
  4. The continued admittance of the student is contingent on good student deportment.
