CALL TO ORDER

Chairman Trafford called the meeting to order at 6:07 p.m.  He led those present in the pledge of allegiance.

Trustees present were: Tim Trafford, Teresa Stroebe, Barbara Forrester Frank, Greg Bochy and Thomas Jones.  District Clerk Diane Brook, Primary School Principal Mike Bowman, Intermediate School Principal Dave DeBoer, and Middle School Principal Mike Sullivan were also present.

Guest present was Evelyn Pyburn from Yellowstone County News.

The discussion centered on effective ways of getting community input and providing information to the community about Lockwood Schools. The possibility of conducting a survey to provide helpful information was one means talked about.

Teresa Stroebe suggested contacting Lockwood Water and Sewer about the survey they had conducted for ideas and survey format.

It was the consensus of the trustees that providing information and education to the public was very important.

Greg Bochy suggested having a fact sheet with the survey.  Possible items to include could be:  different scenarios, educationally relevant factors, scope and boundaries of K-8 Lockwood School District, number of lots in development in the Lockwood area.

Ways of delivering the survey were also discussed.  It could be a mail survey, a door-to-door survey, a website survey, one sent home with students, or a combination.

Other survey concerns discussed were:  timelines for development, performance, and tabulation, how many completed surveys are needed to be statistically relevant, should an outside entity be contracted to conduct the survey, and what questions to ask.

Greg Bochy felt it would be important to provide the public with information about all the improvements that have been done to the buildings and grounds.

The trustees discussed the formation of study circles.  Barbara Forrester Frank said they should look at how Whitefish set up their discussion groups and study circles. Barbara said that it is important to give an opportunity for everyone to express themselves.

Work Session

There was discussion as to whether surveys should be completed prior to conducting the study circles.

Different ways of providing information and communication with the public were discussed.  These suggestions were provided:  A short bulleted section in the newsletter from the Board of Trustees, putting information on the billboard, participation in a radio talk show and on Community 7.

Greg Bochy and Teresa Stroebe agreed to get survey information.  Teresa said she would talk to Craig Wilson and Mr. Floyd at MSU-Billings.

There is no scheduled Future Growth Meeting until after the April Regular Meeting.  Trustees suggested putting this item on the April 12, 2005 agenda:  Growth issue:  Study circles and surveys.

Barbara Forrester Frank suggested attending the next PTA meeting, which would be April 5, 2005.  Greg Bochy said he would go to the meeting.  Thomas Jones said they should ask the PTA how involved they might want to be in this process.

Barbara said they could also bring some of this information to the goals setting meeting on March 30, 2005.

Evelyn Pyburn suggested that contacting and providing information to central or key people within the community could be helpful.  Greg Bochy and Thomas Jones volunteered to speak about the future growth at churches.

Developing a fact or statistic information sheet was discussed.  Pertinent statistics could include Community Education, Boys’ and Girls’ Club, Family Resource, enrollment, and many other educational areas.

Tim suggested that they develop a general handout or bullet sheet for review at the regular April board meeting.

The work session adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
