Snake Bite First Aide

In light of the recent snake bite on a school playground and looking ahead
to a summer of outside activities:

Snake Bite

  1. Treat all snake bites as poisonous until the snake is positively
    identified.
  2. Call EMS. Poisonous snake bite is a medical emergency.
  3. Try to identify type of snake, and call ahead to ER.
  4. Keep student quiet and the bitten area below the level of the heart.
    Splint bitten area if arm or leg.
  5. Wash bite with soap and water.
  6. *Look for signs of shock & treat.
  7. DO NOT cut or suck bite. DO NOT apply tourniquet.

*Signs & symptoms of shock are weakness/dizziness, pale cool clammy skin,
shallow rapid respirations, restlessness/anxiety, weak rapid pluse, nausea
and/or vomiting.

Lay the student down (do not elevate feet due to snake bite).
Lay them on their side in the event of vomiting or drooling.
Keep them warm.

Transport by EMS to hospital emergency care!
