What is Compass? Compass is a web-based learning program. It features content in math, language arts, science and social studies, but it is strongest in math and language arts. In the Intermediate School we use the program for math and language arts with a small amount of science thrown in for fun. |
How does it work? A student is given a test on certain math or reading concepts. A "learning path" is created to cover areas the student didn't master. If the student passes all areas he/she is given a test on more difficult concepts. As the student works on the learning path, the classroom teacher and lab manager follow the child's progress and have the student repeat activities that have not been mastered. Compass is a great tool because it lets each child progress at his or her own pace. At the end of the year, our goal is to have each child complete all grade level work. |
Who comes to the Compass Lab and how often? Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade come to the Compass Lab about 4 times a week. Each session is 45 mintues long. |
Is the lab used for anything besides Compass? Yes. We also use a keyboarding program called "Type to Learn" in this lab. Fourth graders take this keyboarding class first semester and fifth graders have the class second semester. |
Is the lab open for free time? The lab is open on a first come, first served basis from 7:30-7:55 every morning. During that time students may work on Compass, "Math Facts in a Flash", or "Type to Learn." "Math Facts in a Flash" and "Type to Learn" are only available to students who are enrolled in these programs. Students may not use the lab for internet surfing or game playing. If a student's classroom teacher has requested that the student work in a certain subject area of Compass, then the student must work in that area during this open lab time.

Can I access Type to Learn and Compass from home? "Type to Learn" is a program that is sometimes availabe for purchase through the Scholastic Book Order. If your child is working on it at home, that progress will not transfer to the school program. Compass is a web-based program, so access is availabe if you have a home computer with internet access. HOWEVER, part of the reason Compass is so successful is because the homeroom teacher and the lab manager are actively monitoring students. If you feel your child would benefit from additional Compass time at home, please contact your child's homeroom teacher first to clarify how it will be used and supervised at home and whether or not that teacher wants the child to access Compass from home. |
