 Communication Arts

 The student:

 -acquires a sight vocabulary of words  at a second grade level

- uses decoding strategies to identify new words

     • beginning, middle and ending                    sounds

      • segments and blends phonemes

     • digraphs, blends, and vowels

- recognizes word constructions

       • word families, compound words,

 contractions, and word endings

 The student uses reading  strategies:

      • predicting and drawing                      conclusions

      • noting details and main idea

      • sequencing and categorizing

      • finding cause and effect

        • generating new endings or                additional events for stories

      • comparing, contrasting, or                relating stories to other events

 The student:

- locates words and their definitions in the dictionary

-alphabetizes words to second letter

The student:

-listens and responds to stories, and to other material that is read:

     • expresses opinion, asks questions, draws conclusions, identifies story elements of setting and character

Writing

The student:

     - writes independently on a self or teacher chosen topic

     - uses conventions of print

       • letter form and spacing

       • size and consistency

       • staying within the lines

       • forms complete sentences

    - recognizes and understands the use of

       • periods, question marks, exclamation

        points, and capitals

    -progresses to transitional stage of spelling

Math

 The student:

 - uses speed and accuracy to add and subtract facts from 0 - 18

 - uses double digit addition and        subtraction without regrouping

 The student:

 - develops and applies a variety of strategies to solve problems

 - constructs number meanings and understands our numeration system:

      •recognizes 10 as ten ones and                    also 1 ten

      •determines the place value                          for a given digit in a                   number less than 100

      •compares numbers by using                          the symbols = < >

 The student:

 - collects, organizes and interprets data

 -adds coins to a combination of a dollar

       •quarter, dime, nickel, penny

 - measures to the nearest inch an         centimeter

 - tells time to five minute intervals
