March, 2008

We recognized our Youth of the Month this past week. Congratulations to all the winners.

Megan Myers (K - 2) - This young lady was nominated because she has a great personality and is kind to everyone. While much of the time she is a very soft spoken young lady, she has a smile that will simply brighten your day. According to Sheila, "She works hard and enjoys power hour, especially when she is reading a good book."

Kayla Specht (3 - 5) - A fine young lady who has proven to be a great individual with her positive attitude, great sense of humor, and willingness to help wherever needed. Kayla is a regular at the Club and she brings her positive attitude every day.

Matt Galland (6 - 12) - Our teen Member of the Month is a young man who has been substantial help in assisting throughout the day. He helps in such ways as helping in the gym with younger members, cleaning up after snack and he serves as a leader on Lockwood's Flag Football team. Matt has begun to develop into a very fine young man who has a very bright future in and out of the Club.

On March 12 our Board of Directors selected 4 new members to help guide the future of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Yellowstone County. Greg Bochy from Lockwood was one of the new board members selected.

Greg is a member of the Billings Fire Department and serves the Lockwood Community as a member of the Lockwood School Board. Greg is the first member to serve on the Club Board from the Lockwood community.

Here are a couple of pictures from a fantastic activity the Lockwood Staff got the kids involved in. Here is Chuck’s description:

Shirley Phipps and Jen Jutz came up with a great way to teach percentages to the members. They paired them up and then one partner laid on the ground with the other dropping chocolate covered marshmallows into their mouths. The kids had to count how many their partner caught and calculate the percentages of marshmallows caught. We ran this activity a couple of different times with 10 marshmallows then 20 and then 30. In true Lockwood manner or mayhem it was a huge hit and resulted into some ‘syrup slinging’ at the end of the activity. About 80 members participated in the activity, which was great fun for all.
